Evoluent Mouse Manager is an optional but powerful software that may be installed to configure the buttons to perform many common functions. It's all set by default in mine too, but I was trying to remap them to forward/back. I closed synapse and apparently now they work to go forward/back without adjustment. IDK why they wouldn't work with synapse open.
