The TACLANE (KG-175) is short for Tactical FASTLANE ®and was developed by the National Security Agency (NSA) to provide networkcommunications security on Internet Protocol (IP) and Asynchronous TransferMode (ATM) networks for the individual user or for enclaves of users atthe same security level. The KG-175 is a low-cost, Type 1, key-agile, in-linenetwork encryptor for deployment in Department of Defense (DOD) tacticaland strategic networks. KG-175s meet the needs of users who must communicatesecurely over legacy networks such as the Mobile Subscriber Equipment (MSE)packet network and Secure Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNET), andemerging ATM networks. KG-175s provide encryption for IP datagram traffic.ATM traffic and IP datagrams are encapsulated in ATM cells to support avariety of IP, ATM and mixed network configurations. KG-175s can be usedto overlay Secure Virtual Networks on top of existing public and/or privatenetwork infrastructures.

Key management includes automatic key generation via public key cryptography.TACLANE not only employs access control, but includes compromise recoverythat is suitable for tactical as well as fixed network environments. Ituses a cryptographic ignition key (CIK) that renders the device unusableand UNCLASSIFIED when it is removed.
Initial TACLANE deliveries were at Release 1.0. Release 1.01 starteddelivery in May 2000, and Release 1.1 will be delivered at the end of the2nd QTR FY2001. Not all users will require the upgrades.The Taclane E-100variant has the same security features as the Classic but dramaticallyincreases throughput to 160 mbps. It is available as a new unit or as anupgrade to the Classic model. In development is a 200 mbps and a Gigabitversion of the device.
